With the xPortal launch just a few days away, it’s important to lay down some easy steps to prepare for this major upgrade.
But first, let’s go over the basics of how a blockchain works in relation to your funds and the wallet you are using to access them, so that the transition process is as stress-free and straightforward as possible.
Think of a blockchain as a very special notebook that anyone can access. You can easily read the information in the notebook, but need an account to be able to write anything down. Accounts can be easily created and accessed on the blockchain through wallets.
Those wallets, such as xPortal for example, are the interfaces through which you access your account, similar to how web browsers let us navigate the internet while barely knowing what’s going on behind the scenes. With that being said, funds aren’t tied to the application or the device you are using, but to the Secret Phrase (24-words) you received when creating the account.
The secret phrase is critical when restoring your account, in case your device gets lost or destroyed, or in the event of any other unforeseen developments.
Another key aspect to mention is that by using a non-custodial wallet you are the sole owner and custodian of your funds, with absolute control over them. There is no “reset password” feature in case you lose the secret phrase.
Now let's talk about the transition to xPortal. After the official launch on the 28th of February, you will be able to update the App from your phone’s AppStore (be it iOS or Android). As you sit back and enjoy some educational content, the migration will happen in the background and will require no additional action from your end.
However, before getting started with the update, as an additional security step, it's important to make sure you have your secret phrase backed up and you store it somewhere safe. You can do that now, in preparation for the big day, if you haven’t done so already.
You can create a backup by accessing the Secret Phrase section in the App Settings. It can be done manually, by physically writing down the phrase, or digitally, in iCloud or Google Drive.
To manually back up, the user is required to complete three security steps, aimed at raising awareness regarding the importance of the secret phrase, storing it safely, and never sharing it with anyone. Once the three steps are completed the user gains access to the phrase and can proceed with writing it down.
Important note: A manual backup should be done privately, and the phrase should be safely stored in a hidden location.
To create an iCloud or Google Drive backup all you need to do is set a password. Remembering the password is crucial, as without it, importing a wallet from a digital backup is not possible.
The big day is coming. Get ready!
